Remembering the Titan

So I know I'm a day late but after seeing this article on yahoo today (interesting article, if you have the time you should at least watch the video) it made me remember the fact that Biggie Smalls was killed 14 years ago yesterday. It's hard to describe the impact such a big man has had on the industry of hip-hop, ranging from his inspiration of Jay, to running the streets of New York, to his beef with Tupac (which is what most people believe lead to his demise). Overall though, Biggie is undoubtably seen as the single most important thing to ever happen to the industry.

Kanye Playlist

If more people commented and made their presence felt in this blog I would proceed with this post by asking, "What are your top five Kanye songs?" But seeing as no one that isn't an admin, except gritstains, has ever commented on any of our posts I won't ask that and instead assume this is the best Kanye West top 5.

I would like to note, however, that if the featured artist on any of these playlists is a rapper I only choose a song that is from one of that artist's cds or mixtapes. Additionally, I don't like choosing songs in which a guest artist out performs the featured artist. (For example, I did not choose So Appalled off of Kanye's newest cd because I think Jay-z destroys Ye's verse. Also why I didn't choose the Diamonds Remix with Jay because he wipes the floor with West on that one too) It is up for debate, however, on whether Nicki Minaj beats Ye in Monster. I think his verse is good enough though to consider it a top 5 of his.

10 seconds

here's 10 seconds you won't get back.

I'd like to point out the first line of the caption, and I quote, "most people will say this is a waste of 6 seconds of their lives".

I, on the other hand, completely disagree. These guys are just beyond our time.

Oh hey.

Here's this.

Guess who's back?

2.0 boys by Eminem ft. Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf

Well I guess he never really left...other than that 'retirement' thing he had. I'm not sure why rappers think they can retire. When you're good at selling legal crack, why stop? Anyway, Shady's back with a brand new hit and his affiliates at Shady records, including himself Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse (Slaughterhouse is a group composed of Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5'9" and Crooked I), are about to take over Young Money's overplayed crew of lames. Seriously, if the two crews fought on stage does anyone really think Young Money would win?

Fun With Sabermetrics - Day 3 - Inherited Runs

So this one started out as a Fun With Sabermetrics that would pertain to the mystical world of relief pitchers, but somewhere during my research it became more interesting to document just how bad pre-2010 C.J. Wilson was.
So let's first start out by explaining the sabermetric stat for the day, it's easy enough to understand, and it's pretty much the stat by which all relief pitchers are going to be measured in the future. IR, or Inherited Runners, is the number of runners on the bases when a given pitcher enters the game in relief. IS, or Inherited Score, is the number of these runners that score on the given relief pitcher. IS%, therefore, is the percentage of Inherited Runs who subsequently scored. Because, as you know, these runs wouldn't count against this pitcher's ERA, this stat is needed to have some semblance of an idea of how well relief pitchers do when they come into a game with men on.

And boy. Between the 2006 to 2008 seasons, Ceej Wilson was just bad.

Playlist/Weekly Simpsons clip week 4

Each week I am going to change the playlist at the top of the blog to feature five of my favorite songs from a featured artist. This week shows Jimi Hendrix.

Here is also the weekly simpsons clip for this week. Something we can all relate to with Steve Mobs' punk ass.

Weekly Simpsons clip, week 3

O ya here's this too.

Dallas Reppin'

His name is Rhythm "The M3" and he reps the dallas area. This song deserves only one listen before it becomes a constant spin in rotation, as it will only be a matter of time before this dude hits it big. So if you want to listen to a famous rapper before he gets famous go ahead and play and replay this song. His most popular song is "Blue and Silver" a remix of Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow" and after you listen to that song you'll see how Dallas runs through M3's veins. M3 has had my respect as a lyricist since I first heard him rap for a group called the System, you can find a video of their song here, The System, and as you can tell by our top ten favorite rappers (look right), it takes alot to gain my respect as a lyricist.

You can download Rhythm "The M3"'s new mixtape here, Cupid's Arrows

and follow him on his facebook page or his twitter. I suggest you do both.

99 cents and below.

R.3LLZ

The best valentines song out, something guys can listen to without feeling gay and something girls can listen to without having to ask their partner whether or not they "condone these types of acts against sisterhood". (in quotes because I've been asked this before about a gangster rap, the artist shall remain nameless, rendition of a love song.)
Even if you're an underground king and don't like rap songs dedicated to that special someone, as I am, you will still find a spot in your rotation for this one. This kid represents the Dallas area, though originally from New York, so any revenue created would help the D-town gain recognition as a hip-hop stomping ground, and for 99 cents?? What more could you ask for?? (forget the McChickens a minute and focus.)

here's a link to his facebook fan page as well. Enjoy responsibly.

Paper Ave

Hustler's Love

So this is my favorite song of my upcoming mixtape (no release date, no title). Produced by my friend Rafa, if you got comments share them otherwise enjoy the food for thought.

My take on the Michael Young thing.

Two things. First of all, I know what I am. I am one of the biggest Rangers Apologists around. I'll sit on this stupid thing and rip the Cowboys until the sun rises, but as far as I'm concerned, the Rangers can do no wrong. The Texas 4 (Wash, JD, Nolan and Chuckie Moneybags) haven't done anything I disagreed with since about 2007.

Second thing. I may be burning bridges with the 3 people that read this blog, but I feel like what I'm about to say needs to be said.

Michael Young is being a prick.

Urgent News.

Allison Brie and Gillian Jacobs of the best show on TV Community almost kissed. That is all.

Weekly Simpsons clip, week 1

O here's this too.

Badass song, if you haven't looked up pretty lights and downloaded all their music (legally, of course ;)) then you're missing out on MOST of what is good in life. I suggest you use this oppurtunity to get "Finally Moving". A ha..ha....ha...

In other news, ice has coated the dallas area causing wrecks, no school, and most importantly the Dart Rail to close down. With five days left to the super bowl and our public transportation down I wonder if Dallas would be able to handle an ice bowl, or if we, like many Dallas sports fans have grown accustomed to, would lose the championship game to another city.

Fun With Sabermetrics - Day 2 - ERA+

Sup, boners. Let's get right into it because I'm about to go to Jamba Juice.

ERA+ or Adjusted ERA

Another pretty heavily-weighed stat, this time for pitchers, obvi. It's basically a pitcher's ERA adjusted for ballpark (whether the ballpark is a hitter's park or a pitcher's park) and for the average ERA for the league the pitcher's in. Essentially it takes pitchers who throw in pitcher's parks and pitchers who throw in hitter's parks and plops 'em smack on an even playing field. So let's say a pitcher has an ERA of 4.0 in a hitters park where the league avg. is 4.0. He'd have an ERA+ of 100. For ERA+, 100 is the league average. So you got yourself a pretty average pitcher.

To the formula. To find ERA+ you take the league ERA, multiply that by the home park factor, multiply that by 100, then divide by the pitcher's ERA.

Confusing right? If only there was a player we could use as an example. Oh I know. How 'bout newest Rangers pitcher and recipient of a brand new robot arm, Brandon Webb!

B-Webb had 2 absolutely beast years in his last 2 full seasons. Let's take the most recent, 2008. Webb had an ERA of 3.3 while going 22-7 on the year for the D-Backs. So. According to baseball-reference.com, the '08 ERA avg. for the NL was 4.29. Now Chase Field in AZ is a big time hitter's park. In fact in '08 the only park that batters hit better in was, hi-o, Rangers' Ballpark in Arlington, home of your 2010 American League Champion Texas Rangers. Chase had a park factor of 1.135 in 2008. So 4.29 x 1.135 x 100 is 487, divide that by his ERA of 3.30, and KERSPLAT. You have a beastly ERA+ of 147, meaning he was 47% better than the average NL pitcher in 2008.

Some other notable pitchers with awesome ERA+, that douchebag closer in New York who gets to wear number 42 even though it's retired across the league has the best ERA+ in a career at 202 but who cares because he's gonna die in a fiery inferno tonight. Pedro's mystical 2000 season carried an ERA+ of a ridiculous 291. And Tim Keefe, whose name I only mention because it rhymes with queef, set the alltime record in 1880 with an ERA+ of 294, but that was back before the invention of sabermetrics or television or paper or dinosaurs.

So. There.

Fun With Sabermetrics - Day 1 - BABIP

Welcome to Fun With Sabermetrics because I'm bored and have had a baseball boner for so long I need to call that hotline that Cialis gives out at the end of their commercials. These posts will consist of me walking you amateurs through Sabermetrics. As you might not know because you're busy going to college and getting jobs while I'm busy looking at the 1987 Texas Rangers box scores, "Sabermetrics is the analysis of baseball through objective evidence, especially baseball statistics that measure in-game activity rather than industry activity such as attendance." I know, right? It's dumb. It's over-analysis. But it's kind of cool, and you heard it here first: it's going to get big. In the next decade you're going to start seeing a lot more of this, because it's actually pretty accurate shit.

So let's start out easy.

BABIP - Batting Average on Balls In Play

Pretty much the quintessential stat for every day hitters, it basically measures the amount of base hits a player has for every time they hit a playable ball. So no home runs, remember that. Many say it's a statistic of luck, but that's bullsh. A hit is a hit is a hit, and the ability to get good bat on the ball isn't luck. Formula is as follows:

So in the words of Double Rainbow Guy, "What does this mean?" Well shut up for a second and let me tell you. Using someone we all know and want to be inside of love.

Elvis' is pretty easy to calculate, because he doesn't strike out a lot and he totaled ZERO for both HRs and SFs in 2010.

So. For '10 his standard BA was .265. 156 hits, basic math tells us that's the numerator. 588 at-bats minus 96 Ks equals 492, your denumerator or whatever the hell it's called. 156 divided by 492, bam, you got a BABIP of .317 for Mr Andrus, meaning almost 32 percent of all balls put into the diamond by Elvis will fall for base hits. The over/under for the league is about .300, so Elvis is a bit above the average, most likely due to his speed and the ability to beat out BIP that the fatass Milwaukee Brewers first-basemens of the world wouldn't be able to.

So there you have it. BABIP. Go take on the world.

Excuse my mood.

I think the title alone explains it perfectly.

"I know you niggas aimin, i see you muggin hard, you can't deny me, they all salute the underdog."
